Practical information about tickets

See what you can bring with you on board and how to travel with wheel chair, luggage or pram.

Travel with a wheelchair

You have the right to travel with a wheelchair on all of Ruter's modes of transport. Everyone should be able to use the public transport services on an equal basis.

If you are in a wheelchair, you travel for free on the metro, bus, tram, and boat. The free travel principle does not apply to transport on demand.

Sometimes it can be full on board, and then you might have to wait for the next departure.

If the area designated for wheelchairs is not accessible due to other passengers, it is the driver's responsibility to inform them that they must move.

Wheelchair clamps are available on board. Remember to secure the wheelchair with these.

Wheelchair size
  • On buses

Wheelchairs must not exceed 1460 mm in length (Oslo city buses) and 1300 mm (regional buses). Maximum width is 750 mm. All dimensions include the user.

The combined weight of wheelchair and user must not exceed 300 kg, due to the plate that the wheelchair must stand up against during transportation

Electric wheelchairs may have a maximum speed of 10 km/h.

Ruter's buses are designed to comply with the requirements of the regulations relating to universal design and the underlying Bus Directive appendix 7.

  • On trams and ferries

Wheelchairs up to 1 460 mm long and 750 mm wide are accepted.

The combined weight of wheelchair and user must not exceed 325 kg.

Unfortunately, the older trams are not wheelchair-accessible.

Pram

You can bring a pram for free if there is room on board. The driver decides if there is space, based on safety.

Make sure the pram is securely parked with the brake engaged, and hold it steady if necessary. You are responsible for any damage the pram may cause to others.

Due to safety concerns, there are size restrictions for prams.

Pram size

Prams must not exceed 1200 mm in length and 800 mm in width.

Exceptions:

  • On the Metro, the newest trams and all ferries you may bring a pram up to 1460 mm long and 800 mm wide.
  • On older trams, doorways are narrower, so prams must not exceed 1200 mm in length and 700 mm in width.

Please remember that you are responsible for staying within these limits.

Bicycle and electric scooter

You can bring a bike as long as there is space. There are some exceptions, which are described below.

You pay a child fare for bicycles, large scooters, segways, and electric scooters on buses, boats, and trams. On the metro, bicycles are free as long as you travel outside of rush hour.

The rush hour is from Monday to Friday 7:00-9:00 AM and 3:00-6:00 PM. During these times, you also pay the child fare for your bicycle on the metro.

Exception

Traveling is free with:

  • Small children's bikes.
  • Collapsible bicycles and scooters
  • Small scooters/electric scooters that can easily be carried under the arm.
  • Bicycles for disabled.

You can also bring your bike for free on weekends, public holidays, and throughout July, as long as there is space on board.

Travelling with a bicycle on ferries

  • On island ferries B1 and B2, you may bring a bicycle only before 09:00 and only, provided there is sufficient space.
  • On ferry route B10, a maximum of 20 bicycles are permitted on board.
  • On ferry routes B11, B20, B21 and B22, a maximum of 6 bicycles are permitted on board.

On the buses in Nesodden

We must prioritize wheelchairs and prams during rush hours. Bicycles are not allowed on weekdays between 14:00 and 18:00.

Bicycle size
  • The length must not exceed 1,750 mm, while the width must not exceed 700 mm. The same rules apply for electric bicycles, small electric scooters or the like.
  • Please make sure your bicycle is not blocking the path for other passengers on board.
  • It is not permitted to use bicycles, skateboards, roller skates or similar in Ruter's areas or transport services.

Travel with pets

Dogs and guide dogs travel for free. How to travel with a dog:

  • Dogs must be kept on a leash and must not obstruct free passage.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that the dog does not cause inconvenience to other passengers.
  • You are personally responsible for any damage the dog may cause to others.
  • Animals are not allowed directly on the seat, and dogs should sit on the floor or in your lap.

Transportation on demand does not allow animals, except for guide dogs and service dogs.

Travel with luggage

It is free to travel with skis, sleds, and other baggage. The staff will determine if there is space available, and they may charge a fee if you bring very bulky luggage.

Skis, sledges and other luggage must be held or placed such that they do not inconvenience other passengers.

Travel with a companion

Companions to persons with disabilities who cannot travel alone, travel for free on all our modes of transportation.

Companions who travel for free cannot combine the companion certificate with the group discount. To use the group discount, the traveler must have a valid adult, senior, student, or military ticket, and be over 18 years old.

Remember companion certificate

You must be able to present a companion certificate during a ticket inspection. The companion certificate is issued by the municipality or district, and it is the person with reduced mobility who receives the certificate. We also accept equivalent certificates from other countries provided they clearly state who the issuer is and reason for issue.

Onboard surcharge

Onboard surcharge is a measure to improve the punctuality of public transport. Selling tickets on board takes time, so it is important that as many people as possible buy their tickets in advance. This ensures everyone arrives more quickly.

How to buy a ticket

  • On buses and boats: Onboard surcharge of 20 kroner for adults (all zones) and 10 kroner for children and seniors (only applies when boarding in zone 1). If you pay with travel credit, you will avoid the onboard surcharge.
  • On trams and the metro: It is not possible to buy a ticket on board trams or the metro.
  • On Vy trains: It is also more expensive to buy a ticket on board Vy trains.
