Monthly pass and school ticket: What does each ticket cover?
From 1 August 2026, most upper secondary school students in Akershus will use a discounted monthly pass when travelling by public transport to and from school.
Some pupils may still be entitled to free school transport. This applies to pupils who have poor public transport options where they live, or who are granted transport on medical grounds.

*Right to free school transport
One of the conditions must be met for the pupil to be entitled to free transport to and from school:
- Lives more than 6 km from the school and has poor public transport services in their residential area.
- Lives more than 6 km from the school and has more than 3 km to walk to the nearest stop with regular departures (at least once an hour).
- Has a disability, injury, or illness.
**The student buys the ticket themself
Monthly pass:The student buys the 30-day ticket themselves, in the Ruter app or at points of sale. This also applies to students in adult education (20–25 years old).
The exceptions are:
School ticket:The student applies directly in the application portal and will receive the ticket on their mobile phone (optional) or on a travel card once it has been approved.
Special transport:The school applies on behalf of pupils who have a disability, injury or illness and need adapted transport.
