Ruter's self-driving pilot gets new cars

The agreement has been signed together with Holo, Ruter's research and development partner, who operates the autonomous driving pilot.
– This is exciting for Ruter, for the industry, and not least for everyone living in Oslo and Akershus. With these new and more spacious vehicles, we are really starting to see the contours of a transport service that can make private cars redundant for many of us. We are looking forward to putting them into operation this summer, says Eivind Graff Christiansen, Director of Market and Business Development at Ruter.
What is Ruter's self-driving pilot?
This is the self-driving pilot in Groruddalen
The self-driving pilot is one of several initiatives to achieve Ruter's goal of developing shared, autonomous demand-responsive transport integrated into Ruter's public transport services. We believe that such services can be an attractive alternative to the car, and that more passengers sharing a journey can reduce the number of private cars on the roads.
The operation of the pilot is managed by Holo, our partner in research and development. The project is based on insights and learning from previous pilots at Akershusstranda, Kongens gate, Ormøya, and Ski, and it is the first project where an area-wide demand-responsive service is tested. The pilot area consists of about 500 km of road and covers an area of 22 km2 through the districts of Grorud, Stovner, and Alna in Oslo, as well as parts of Lørenskog in Akershus.
The pilot project is largely financed by an EU project called “ULTIMO”. Oslo is one of three areas in the project along with Geneva (Switzerland) and Hereford (Germany).
MOIA's self-driving ID.BUZZ vehicles are custom-made for a shared mobility service. This will be available as part of a ride-hailing service. The vehicles are spacious enough to comfortably seat 3-4 passengers. In the agreement, MOIA provides digital services and user interfaces, which are intended to enhance the digital customer experience.
When will the cars be here?
The ID.BUZZ vehicles will be in a commissioning phase until spring 2026, and will be available from June 2026. From March to June, customers will therefore experience an interruption in the service, and must therefore use other transportation services during this period.
The current Nio vehicles can still be ordered until February 2026.
