Electric scooters and bicycles offer little protection if something goes wrong, and you may be difficult to see in traffic. Therefore, stay alert, adjust your speed, and be considerate of others.

How to use bicycles and electric scooters safely

Before you drive:

  • Wearing a helmet is recommended. Helmets are mandatory for anyone under the age of 15 when riding an electric scooter.
  • Check that the brakes, steering, wheels, and lights are working.
  • Never ride with more than one person on the scooter.
  • Never drive after drinking alcohol.

Drive to a suitable location:

  • Follow the direction of traffic and road signs.
  • Preferably use bike lanes or shared pedestrian and cycle paths.
  • Do not ride on the sidewalk where a bike lane is available.
  • Keep right.
  • Avoid sudden transitions between sidewalks, bike lanes, and roadways.

Adjust your speed:

  • Stop at the red light.
  • Drive at a speed that allows you to stop if something unexpected happens.
  • Slow down at intersections, around building corners, in areas with poor visibility, and in crowded places.
  • Take extra care on wet or uneven surfaces, gravel, leaves, ice, curbs, or tram tracks.
  • Keep both hands on the handlebars.
  • Wait until you have stopped before using your phone.

Be visible and predictable:

  • Clearly indicate that you are turning by using the turn signal (electric scooter) or your hand (bicycle).
  • Look behind you before turning or changing position.
  • Make eye contact with other road users.
  • Keep a safe distance from buses and trucks, and avoid their blind spots.
