Planned changes for the Holmenkollen Line in 2032
Published: 08.01.2026
More and more people are using public transport, and to accommodate this trend, studies have been conducted and political decisions have been made on how to develop the metro network going forward. Significant investments are now being made to the Fornebu Line, and new carriages are being acquired to provide a good service on this line. At the same time, plans are underway to increase the number of departures and capacity on other subway lines.
Why should line 1 stop at Majorstuen?
All subway lines currently run through the downtown tunnel, which today has limited capacity. The capacity will be increased with the introduction of a new signaling system, but the Fornebu Line and the planned increase in departures on the Kolsås Line from 2032 will fully utilize this capacity. From what we can assess today, it will not be possible to run more trains through the tunnel without affecting punctuality and regularity.
To make the best use of today's infrastructure, Ruter has therefore proposed that the Holmenkollen Line should turn around at Majorstuen. This will free up space in the downtown tunnel for more and longer trains on the busiest lines, thus increasing capacity where it is needed the most.
The Holmenkollbanen line operates with short trains due to the length of the platforms on this line. Today, the same trains also serve the Lambertseterbanen on the east side of the city center, which leads to challenges with insufficient capacity and crowding on board the Lambertseterbanen.
What does this mean for you as a traveler?
For those traveling on the Holmenkollen Line, the planned changes mean that from 2032, one will have to change metro at Majorstuen if they want to continue to or from the city center. Majorstuen station is being rebuilt to make this transfer as simple and efficient as possible with new, wide platforms, universally designed bridge over the tracks, and short ramps between platforms. The goal is that all travelers, regardless of needs, should be able to change metro quickly and safely. The station is being constructed so that the Holmenkollen Line can still be run through the city center tunnel, even though this is not included in the planned service from 2032.
Good offer for travelers on line 1
Holmenkollbanen will continue to have a good service, with 4 departures per hour. As Holmenkollbanen will be less dependent on the other metro services, technically it will be easier to potentially increase to 6 departures per hour in the future if the financial framework allows for it.
Until 2032, Holmenkollbanen will operate as it does today through the city center. We understand that the planned change will be seen as a disadvantage by some, especially for those who are used to traveling directly between Holmenkollen and the city center. At the same time, this is a necessary adjustment to ensure that as many people as possible have access to a good public transport service in the years to come. The goal of the change is to ensure a more efficient, future-oriented, and sustainable public transport service for the whole of Oslo.
