Privacy Policy for the Ruter App

Privacy, permissions, and statistics when using the Ruter app.

When you use the Ruter app, you can choose to make your journey effectively anonymous to Ruter and gain access to basic features such as travel search and ticket purchase. This applies even if you register your payment information for later use. The reason is that it is the payment services, and not Ruter, that store your bank card and/or account details.

You can also enter details about home and work addresses (favorites). These are only stored in the app when you do not register.

The Personal Data Act on lovdata.no

Purpose of the processing

Ruter processes personal data such as IP address and GPS location in order to respond to requests you make from the app for travel searches and ticket purchases.

Ruter processes information about which municipalities or basic statistical units you are in to be able to offer you functionality we are testing or providing in the geographical areas you travel.

Legal basis

The legal basis for the processing is that we are to fulfill the agreement on ticketing and, if you wish, travel search with you.

This is what we handle

  • Temporary processing of IP address when your mobile phone sends a request for a ticket or other information to our system.
  • Temporary processing of GPS position to show you the way to the nearest stop if you choose to activate this feature.
  • Short-term processing of GPS position, in order to show you the weather forecast.
  • Brief and local processing of GPS position on your phone to determine which larger geographic areas you travel in. Ruter will not know your exact location, but which municipalities or basic statistical units you travel in and how often you open the Ruter app in the given areas. This will enable Ruter to offer you functionality or services that are available where you travel.
  • Information about the device manufacturer (e.g., Apple, Samsung, etc.), operating system and version (e.g., iOS 15.1), and which version of the Ruter app you are using (e.g., v6.2.3). This is processed in order to provide you with faster assistance if you contact our customer service center.
  • Timestamp of when the device first started using the app, as well as the last time the device opened the app. This is processed to more quickly identify sources of errors (debug) when needed, and to know which device to send notifications to if necessary.
  • Push notification key to send important alerts to the device.
  • Public encryption key to encrypt data intended only for the specific device, such as the control code for the ticket.

We only process your information where it is necessary to achieve the purpose we have described above. IP address and GPS location will not be linked to you as a customer. By short-term processing, we mean temporary processing in order to deliver the service without storing data.

Access and use

IP addresses and GPS positions are, in practice, not accessible to Ruter employees. They are only stored for a few seconds in our technical systems, and are immediately deleted.

You have the right to access, rectify, portability, and deletion of information that has been stored about you. However, we cannot provide you with access to IP addresses and location data as we do not store this information. But we can give you confirmation that our processing is in accordance with the way we have described in this statement.

Since we do not store your personal information, it cannot be disclosed to a third party.

Storage and deletion

IP address and GPS location are not stored and are deleted immediately.

Cloud solutions

Through our service provider, we use Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud storage of information. The information is stored within the EU. All data traffic occurs over a secure connection (HTTPS). Access to the information is restricted.

Access on the phone

For the Ruter app to function optimally, it needs access to certain features on your phone. You can choose to turn off these permissions and still use the app, but some features may then be unavailable or not function optimally. You turn off the permissions in the settings on your phone.

When you share your location in the app, it is essentially the app itself that knows where you are. Ruter only stores the information to automatically respond to travel searches, and then it is deleted. Ruter and our employees will neither see nor store data about your movement patterns.

Statistics and diagnostics

We aim to improve the Ruter app, and use Amplitude to collect anonymous user statistics for analysis purposes and Datadog to collect anonymous diagnostics about the use of the service for internal quality assurance. In this context, Ruter processes the IP address, which is not stored and is deleted immediately after use. Information about your use of the app cannot be linked to you.

The treatment is necessary to protect a legitimate interest in improving and further developing our services in the app.
