We´re celebrating Public Transport Day!
Last updated: 17.04.2026, 09:32
Maybe you agree with these? We have asked some of the residents of Oslo and Akershus about their relationship to public transport.
A brand new day of celebration
There are many important commemorative days, but this one definitely has a special place in our hearts: public transport day!
On 17 April 2026, UITP (International Association of Public Transport) and the UN are launching the very first Public Transport Day. This is a day dedicated to celebrating public transport and what it means for people, society and the environment. Starting in 2026, this day will be observed on 17 April every year.
From horse-drawn tram to electric bus
The first chapter in the book about public transport in Oslo and Akershus began with horse-drawn trams in the streets of Kristiania in 1875. One hundred and thirty-three years later, in 2008, Ruter was established – with the mission of bringing public transport in Oslo and Akershus together under one roof.
Since then, the service has grown year by year: more routes, more departures, and increasingly eco‑friendly vehicles. Public transport in Oslo became emission-free as early as 2023, five years ahead of schedule. That the world is now celebrating its very first Public Transport Day therefore feels completely right – public transport deserves its own day in the calendar.
Because there are many reasons to celebrate – a full 399 million, which was the number of boardings on public transport in Oslo and Akershus last year.
But there are also many reasons to be thankful ❤️
So thanks
to you who keep the wheels turning with a smile
to you who give up your seat to others who need it more
for those of you who are planning the routes
to you who thank the driver for the ride
for you who are waiting for the next bus when the one in front is too full
to you who let others get off before you get on
to you who share your umbrella when the bus shelter is crowded
to you who help the stroller get on board
for you who make the journey a little better for everyone around you
to everyone who is with us on the journey.
Happy Public Transport Day!
