Public transport arrangements for His Majesty the King’s funeral

Public transport in central Oslo in connection with the funeral of His Majesty King Harald V.

In connection with the funeral on September 9, 2026, large parts of central Oslo will be closed from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Public transport services in the city center will be reduced throughout this period.

“This is a very sad time for the Norwegian people. Public transport services are therefore making adjustments for the funeral and allowing people space to grieve,” says Møyfrid Aandstad, Director of Operations at Ruter.

Since large parts of the city center will be closed off, the easiest way to get around downtown will be on foot. If you have difficulty getting around, staff will be available to assist passengers at stations in the city center and at selected tram and bus stops.

A minute of silence

On the day of the funeral, King Harald will be commemorated with a minute's silence across the country, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:01 p.m. This coincides with the start of the ceremony at Oslo Cathedral. Public transport will also observe the silence, with vehicles stopping at the nearest stop and remaining stationary for one minute.

General travel advice:

• Trams and many bus routes will be diverted or suspended in the city center. Allow extra time if you rely on these services, and plan how you will travel. Updated travel information is available in the Ruter app and at ruter.no.
• Are you going to Oslo Cathedral? The nearest metro station is Jernbanetorget. From there, it's a short walk.
• The train is also a good option for getting to the city center that day. If you get off the bus at Skøyen, you can take the train into the city center.
• There will be many people in the city center on this day. We recommend that everyone allow plenty of time, be considerate, and look out for one another.

Here is an overview of the entire customized public transport service:

Metro:

The metro will run as normal, with two exceptions:

• Stortinget station is completely closed from the start of service at 5:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. on this day. You cannot board or alight here.
• At Nationaltheatret station, the entrance from Johanne Dybwads plass is closed. Passengers must use the entrance on Ruseløkkveien. Please note that metro trains only stop at Nationaltheatret when traveling toward Jernbanetorget. Westbound trains do not stop at Nationaltheatret.

Travel advice: If you are traveling to the city center on this day, it is best to take the metro or train. The metro will run as normal to and from Jernbanetorget. If you are taking the metro from Majorstuen toward the city center, you should get off at Nationaltheatret or Jernbanetorget. If you are taking the metro toward Majorstuen, it is best to use Jernbanetorget, as Stortinget and Nationaltheatret stations are closed in that direction.

Tram:

The tram will not run through the city center on this day. This will result in the following service cancellations:

• Lines 12 and 15 will not operate between Solli and Jernbanetorget.
• Line 13 is cancelled between Solli and Ljabru. It is replaced by line 19 between Jernbanetorget and Ljabru.
• Lines 17, 18, and 19 will not operate between Holbergs plass and Jernbanetorget.

Bus:

Central Oslo is closed to through traffic, affecting routes that operate in the city center.

These routes will follow a new route and will not stop at stops in the city center:

• Route 21 is not running between Tjuvholmen and Bislett.
• Route 30 runs via the Festning Tunnel and the Grønli junction. Additional stops at Frognerkilen toward the city center and in Bjørvika.
• Route 31 is being diverted between Skøyen station and Hausmanns bru via the Festning Tunnel and the Grønli junction. An additional stop will be made in Bjørvika.
• Route 31E is being diverted between Sjølyst and Hausmanns bru via the Festning Tunnel and the Grønli junction. Additional stop in Bjørvika.
• Route 34 is being diverted between Jacob Church and the Bus Terminal via Hausmanns gate and Nylandsveien. An additional stop is available at Hausmanns bru.
• Route 37 is being diverted between St. Hanshaugen and the Bus Terminal via Alexander Kiellands plass, Maridalsveien, Hausmanns gate, and Nylandsveien.
• Route 42 is not operating between Sjølyst and Tjuvholmen.

These routes will have a new terminus and will no longer run into the city centre:

• Routes 70 and 70E are not operating between Jernbanetorget and Nationaltheatret.
• Route 81 is not operating between Bjørvika and Filipstad/Fornebu.

Regional bus:

Routes 140E, 150, 150E, 160, 250, 250E, 255E and 265E terminate at Skøyen station on this day and do not continue to Nationaltheatret. If you are travelling to the city centre, change to route 20 or 31 at Skøyen, or take the train to the city centre.

The routes from Romerike and Enebakk/Follo are operating as normal.

Electric scooter:

Electric scooters from the companies Ryde, Bolt and Voi will not operate in central Oslo from midnight on Tuesday, September 8, through Wednesday, September 9.

Boat:

Boat services in Oslo will operate as normal on Wednesday.

• Bicycles are not permitted within the pedestrian zone in the city center, so you cannot bring a bicycle on board the boat if you plan to disembark there. For security reasons, umbrellas are also not permitted within the secured area, so you may not disembark with an umbrella either.

The lost property office at the National Theatre is closed on this day.
