Carpooling
What is carpooling?
Carpooling is a service that uses smart technology to match passengers and drivers heading in the same direction. If you need a ride, you can find a driver. If you have a car, you can take passengers with you. This way, you have more travel options, while we also reduce the number of cars on the roads. Additionally, you share the travel expenses by compensating the driver for the trip.
Ruter facilitates carpooling through the TRIPS app. Here you can select your route, whether you want to register as a passenger or driver, and who you would like to carpool with.
Here's how you get started
- Routes facilitate carpooling in the TRIPS app.
- You register as a passenger or driver
- As a driver, you enter the route you want to offer for carpooling
- As a passenger, you search for available routes in the search field
- Meet at the agreed pickup location
- You can give a review of the trip/driver or passenger.

Where can I travel with carpooling?
Carpooling is available throughout Oslo and Akershus, with the exception of Oslo city center (within ring 1). However, it is still possible to drive through Oslo city center, but not to pick up or drop off passengers within this area.
What does the driver get and what does the passenger pay?
As a driver, you will be compensated for travel expenses. The compensation is 10 NOK per passenger when the trip starts, then 1 NOK per kilometer after 3 km. You can receive a maximum of 50 NOK in compensation per passenger.
Example:
3 km = 10 SEK
4 km = 11 SEK
10 km = 10 SEK + 7 SEK = 17 SEK
20 km = 10 SEK + 17 SEK = 27 SEK
As a passenger, you will normally pay a deductible per trip, but during the start-up phase, Ruter covers the entire amount. Both drivers and passengers process payments in and out through the TRIPS app.
Who can use carpooling?
- To register as a driver and post rides for carpooling, you must be over 18 years old and have a valid Norwegian driver's license. You must also verify yourself with Vipps in the TRIPS-app.
- To register as a passenger, you must be over 16 years old and verify yourself with Vipps in the TRIPS app.
What happens if the car or passenger doesn't show up?
Carpooling works best when both driver and passenger show up as agreed. If there are changes in plans and you cannot complete the trip, you must cancel as soon as possible. In the TRIPS app, you can both cancel and send messages to those you are carpooling with. Note that Ruter's travel guarantee does not apply to carpooling.
Is the car insured for carpooling?
TRIPS is merely a facilitation platform for carpooling. It is the driver's responsibility to have valid and mandatory liability insurance.

Why is Ruter testing carpooling?
The essence of carpooling is that multiple people share a car, which leads to fewer cars on the roads. It's simply more space-efficient to have several passengers in the same vehicle. Carpooling provides a better mobility service and a good alternative to private cars.
Ruter will explore carpooling as a cost-effective supplement to public transport services. Carpooling is a low-threshold initiative with great potential, without the need for new infrastructure and expensive investments in equipment.
