Since its launch in November 2025
- 5800+ passenger trips completed
- 2,000 car trips removed from the roads
- 20+ partners across the entire region
- 180,000 NOK paid out to drivers

You drive. Get paid.
You have a car, maybe two or three free seats, and a workplace or cabin you already drive to. Post your trip in TRIPS. When someone wants a ride, you get paid to take them with you.
What you earn per passenger
The compensation from Ruter is NOK 10 for the first 5 km, plus NOK 1.5 per km thereafter. On most trips you can bring up to 3 passengers. You can receive up to NOK 4,000 in compensation each month when you drive with TRIPS.
Some examples of trips
Lunner to Hagan approx. 73 NOK
Røyken to Kolsås approx. 55 NOK
Oslo to Ås approx. 46 NOK
How to do it as a driver
- Download the TRIPS app and verify yourself with Vipps
- Post the route you’re driving
- You receive a request when someone wants a ride, and you can always decline
- Drive together. The money is paid out automatically.

You’re a passenger. Save time, and often money too.
You’re going the same way as many others, but you don’t have a car, or you don’t feel like using it today. Look up the trip in TRIPS. Get a ride with a colleague or a neighbor who’s already driving that route.
What you pay
It’s cheaper than driving yourself and, for many people in areas with poor public transport, faster than the bus or train. The price you pay to travel with TRIPS is based on how far and where you travel. Look up your trip in the TRIPS app to see the price!
Some travel for free
You travel for free if you use TRIPS to go to a partner workplace and your entire journey takes place in Oslo or Akershus.
Here’s what you do if you’re the passenger
- Download the TRIPS app and verify yourself with Vipps
- Search for the trip
- Send a request to a driver who is going the same way
- Agree on a pickup location in the app, show up, and get in the car
What the passengers tell us
We asked those on board how they would otherwise have traveled.
4 out of 10would otherwise have driven a car alone.
More than 4 out of 10 passengerswould otherwise have driven themselves if they weren’t carpooling with TRIPS.
A TRIPS passenger saves an average of 30 minutes on their commute each way by carpooling, compared to a slower public transport alternative.
Coordination across the entire region, now also across the county border
You can carpool anywhere in Oslo and Akershus, with one exception: downtown Oslo within Ring 1. You can of course drive through this area, but you may not pick up or drop off passengers there.
We have also opened up for trips across county borders. As long as the trip starts or ends in Oslo or Akershus, you can carpool to and from Buskerud, Vestfold, Østfold, Innlandet and Telemark.
Safety during carpooling
Carpooling should feel safe. That’s why everyone is verified, and every trip is logged in real time. Note that Ruter’s travel guarantee does not apply to carpooling.
Both drivers and passengers verify themselves with Vipps
- Drivers must be over 18 years old and have a valid Norwegian driver’s license. Passengers must be over 16 years old.
- All trips are logged in TRIPS, and you evaluate each other after the trip is completed
- TRIPS is a communication platform. The driver, as with private car use in general, is responsible for the vehicle and the mandatory liability insurance.
- Users who do not follow the guidelines may be banned
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the driver get, and what does the passenger pay?
As a driver, you will be compensated for travel expenses. The compensation is 10 NOK per passenger when the trip starts, then 1 NOK/km after 3 km. You can receive a maximum of 50 NOK in compensation per passenger.
As a passenger, you would normally pay a deductible per trip, but during the start-up phase, Ruter covers the entire amount.
Where can I carpool?
Carpooling is available throughout Oslo and Akershus, except for central Oslo (within ring 1). However, it is still possible to drive through central Oslo, but not to pick up or drop off passengers within this area.
How does payment work?
Payment is made through the TRIPS app (Ruter version), and there is no direct settlement between driver and passenger.
What is the age limit?
You must be at least 16 years old to use the service as a traveler. As a driver, you must be over 18 years old and have a valid class B driver's license.
Why is Ruter testing carpooling?
The essence of carpooling is that multiple people share a car, which leads to fewer cars on the roads. It's simply more space-efficient to have several passengers in the same vehicle. Carpooling provides a better mobility service and a good alternative to private cars.
Ruter will explore carpooling as a cost-effective supplement to public transport services. Carpooling is a low-threshold initiative with great potential, without the need for new infrastructure and expensive investments in equipment.
Destinations and benefits summer 2026
Carpool to the experience
This summer you can carpool to TusenFryd, Henie Onstad, Kistefos and Hadeland Glassverk. Each place offers its own benefits to those who have shared a car: half price as a passenger, compensation as a driver, and something extra at the destination.

iPhoneAndroidHalf price for the passenger, more for the driver
On destination trips, Ruter covers half of the passenger’s fare, and the driver’s compensation is slightly higher than on a regular trip. This makes the journey affordable for everyone and gives the driver extra incentive to fill up the car.
