Terms and conditions for Selvkjørende pilot

Selvkjørende is the name of Ruter's pilot service offering shared demand-responsive transportation with autonomous vehicles in Groruddalen and Southern Lørenskog. Please note that the vehicles are prototypes operated for testing and development purposes and that the safety driver may intervene at any time.

The pilot is developed by Ruter together with its research and development partner Holo. Its purpose is to establish and test a small-scale autonomous transport service and to gather learning and experience that can inform whether and how autonomous, demand-responsive transport can become a permanent part of the public transport offering in the future. As the service is part of an ongoing research and development project, its scope and features may change as the pilot progresses.

These terms and conditions apply to the pilot service Selvkjørende and are initially valid for the pilot period from August 2026 to March 2027. Ruter may terminate the service earlier but will provide reasonable notice if that occurs.

By downloading and activating the Selvkjørende app, you enter into an agreement with Ruter AS and accept our terms and conditions described on this page. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the rights and obligations.

For the trip, Ruter's conditions of travel also apply, with exceptions and clarifications described under the "Conditions of travel" section of this agreement.

Participation in the pilot

Access to Selvkjørende may be limited during the pilot period. Ruter may restrict the service to registered users of the app and may, at its discretion, further limit participation to invited users, a waitlist, or a maximum number of active participants at any given time. Specific eligibility requirements are described under "Other conditions" below. Ruter may adjust these participation requirements as the pilot develops.

Generalities

With the Selvkjørende app, you can plan and pay for your trip.

The app allows you to

  • search for trips
  • book and pay for trips
  • save favorite locations
  • see purchase history

To use the Selvkjørende pilot service, Ruter must process a minimum amount of personal data, and you must create a user profile in the Selvkjørende app. You can read more about Ruter's handling of personal data in the Selvkjørende privacy statement. (https://ruter.no/en/about-ruter/privacy)

Privacy statement for Selvkjørende pilot service.

Terms of using the app and service

You book trips through the Selvkjørende app. The following conditions also apply:

  • You may not change or manipulate fixed content on the application.
  • Any attempt to recreate the original source code of the software (known as reverse engineering) is strictly prohibited.
  • Receipts, purchase history, and/or data made available by Ruter shall not be copied, transferred, traded, and/or distributed in any way.
  • You are responsible for meeting up at the designated departure point at the specified time.

Feedback

  • As part of the pilot, you will be asked to complete a short feedback questionnaire after each trip. Where feedback is a required part of the pilot, completing the questionnaire is a condition for booking further trips through the app. Your feedback helps Ruter evaluate and improve the service during the test period.

Payment

The service is free of charge during the initial phase of the pilot. Ruter will give reasonable advance notice to customers before introducing any payment for the service. When payment starts, a valid receipt for Selvkjørende is the order confirmation found in the purchase history in the app.

When paying for the trip, you must:

  • Have sufficient funds in your bank account during the purchase process to complete the transaction.
  • Ensure you have adequate data traffic and battery on your phone to display valid payment.
  • Your mobile phone, tablet, or similar device must also function normally with a readable screen.

If you are unable to present a valid order confirmation in the app's purchase history, it will be considered traveling without a valid receipt. If you book a trip for others on your mobile device, you must travel together so you can show valid payment for everyone.

The operator may ask individuals without a valid travel right to leave the vehicle.

Refund and travel guarantee

For the pilot service Selvkjørende, the following compensation terms apply:

If the vehicle is more than 20 minutes late from the agreed pickup time, you have two options:

  1. You can complete the trip with the delay.
  2. You can cancel the trip, and you will not be charged.

Please note that we do not refund expenses related to taxis or other alternative transport.

For exceptions to when the travel guarantee applies, refer to Ruter's travel guarantee for regular transport. Read more about this under "When am I not entitled to a refund?" in Ruter's Refund and travel guarantee.

Conditions of travel

For the trip, Ruter's conditions of travel apply, with the following specifications:

Exceptions for Selvkjørende pilot service:

Appendix 1: Ruter's Travel guarantee

Section 2: What a passenger may bring along

The Self-Driving pilot service is part of a research and development project with limitations related to the vehicle's design and the ability to accommodate extra equipment and luggage. Therefore, there are restrictions on what passengers can bring on the trip.

2.1 Luggage
Passengers can bring easily manageable, non-hazardous items/luggage with the maximum size of 40 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm onboard, provided it is safely held, stored or secured during the trip by passengers (eg. on the floor between the passengers legs ) and do not obstruct other passengers or the safety operator.

2.3 Wheeled devices that cannot be taken along
Due to limited space in the vehicle, items such as strollers/prams, wheelchairs, or bicycles cannot be taken on board. Child safety equipment such as car seats cannot be brought along either.

Other conditions

Selvkjørende is currently not accessible for wheelchair users, passengers with reduced mobility or other disabilities, or service dogs, due to technical limitations of the vehicles during this pilot phase. Passengers must ensure that they can use the vehicle safely and enter and exit the vehicle independently in any situation. Ruter is working on solutions to improve accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility or other disabilities as the pilot develops. Passengers must be at least 18 years old to book or travel.

Vehicles use sensors to interact with the environment. There are no studies to date on whether this technology has an impact on such pacemakers. As a precautionary measure, we are therefore unable to allow individuals with pacemakers to take part in the test phase.

Confidentiality

The vehicles and their technology are prototypes. You must not publish or share non-public information about the vehicles, their technical systems or software that you obtain during the pilot. This does not apply to information that is publicly available or where disclosure is required by law.

Changes to the terms

During the pilot period, changes to the terms may occur. Changes may include modifications to refund conditions, cancellation conditions, price changes, or other conditions.

Breach of contract

If the terms and conditions for Selvkjørende pilot service are not complied with, or you misuse the service (including the app) in any other way, the following applies

  • Ruter may block the app from further use. In that event, Ruter will reimburse any outstanding payments you have made.
  • You are also responsible for any financial loss incurred by Ruter in relation to your non- compliance of our terms, and/or the misuse of the service.

Please note

These terms are a translation of the original Norwegian terms. In case of conflict or inconsistency with the Norwegian version of the terms, the Norwegian language version shall prevail.
