Ticket inspection and privacy

Here you will find information on how Ruter processes your personal data if you receive an additional charge (fee) during a ticket inspection.

Purpose

According to Ruter's travel conditions section 6, passengers who cannot present a valid ticket must pay an additional fee (surcharge). The purpose of the processing is to be able to demand – and follow up on additional fees (surcharges) that are not paid on the spot.

This is what we handle

Customer Information

This is contact information such as name, address, and date of birth, time of ticket inspection, any presented identification, and the customer's explanation. Your customer information is only linked to travel and sales information if it is necessary to process your case.

Travel Information

Information such as the zone and stop where you started your journey, when you scanned your travel card, which type of ticket you used, and your travel card number. Data from the last eight scans are stored on the travel card, solely for travel and sales information if necessary to process your case.

Sales information

Information from the sale of a ticket or top-up/use of travel funds such as the time of purchase, amount, ticket type, and the zone in which the ticket is valid.

Legal basis

The treatment is necessary to protect Ruter's legitimate interest in charging an additional fee (surcharge), as part of revenue protection. We do not process more information than necessary. You can avoid being registered by having a valid ticket, or by paying the fee on the spot where the ticket inspection occurs.

Access and use

Access to personal data is restricted and is only used in connection with the follow-up of claims for additional fees (charges). You have the right to access and rectification, data portability, and erasure of information stored about you. Your information will not be disclosed unless we are required to do so by public authorities.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, and data portability.

In addition, you have the right to object to further processing due to special circumstances. Ruter will consider your objection and either terminate the processing or implement specific information security measures such as further restricting access to the information, enhanced procedures for requests for access, etc.

Storage and deletion

If you pay the additional fee, your customer information will be deleted after 12 months.

In other cases, the information is stored as long as the case regarding the additional fee (surcharge) is open with us, but for a maximum of up to three years if legal recovery is not initiated. Cases of name misuse are deleted after 12 months. The same applies if we waive a correctly imposed fee. We will also delete the information at the latest within one month if the fee turns out to be incorrectly imposed.

Travel information is stored for up to 365 days after the ticket has expired or alternatively 365 days after the complainant has submitted a written complaint to Ruter about an issue with your journey. This is to be able to handle the customer's right to complain to the Transport Complaints Board.
