Pay-as-you-go means you're never without a ticket

Travelcard with pay-as-you-go credit. Top-up the credit on your Ruter travelcard.

Pay-as-you-go credit can be added to your travelcard for purchase of Ruter's tickets. When you pay with pay-as-you-go credit, you are spared the on board surcharge in zone 1. Pay-as-you-go credit may therefore be a good solution for those who don't travel very often.

This is how pay-as-you-go credit works

On city buses, trams and the Metro in Oslo

If you are travelling within Zone 1, a single ticket fare for one zone is automatically deducted from your credit when you scan your card. The ticket is then activated (started) and becomes valid for your journey.

For travel in all other zones, you buy a single ticket using pay-as-you-go from the bus driver or ferry conductor who will enter the correct number of zones. You can also use the ticket machines by selecting pay-as-you-go as your means of payment. You must then activate (start) the ticket by scanning it before you get on board.

On regional buses and ferries in Akershus

Tell the driver your destination and he or she will deduct a single ticket fare from the credit on your card. If you want a child or seniors ticket, just tell the driver.

On the train

You cannot use pay-as-you-go to pay on the train, so it's important to make sure you have a valid ticket before you get on board.

If you're travelling within Zone 1 (the Oslo zone), a single ticket fare for one zone is automatically deducted when you scan your card. In this way the ticket is started up and becomes valid for your journey.

If you want to travel through several zones, or within one zone in Akershus, you must use the ticket machine. Here you can select a single ticket and use pay-as-you-go as your means of payment. Note that the ticket now on your card must be activated by a scanner before you get on board.

NB! At train stations without ticket machines you can buy a single ticket on board using either cash or your card without paying the on-board surcharge.

Both a ticket and pay-as-you-go on your travelcard

If you have both a ticket and pay-as-you-go credit on your card, the system will always select the ticket in preference to your credit. In other words, the credit on your travelcard will not be deducted if you have other tickets on your card (assuming that the tickets in question are within their validity period).

If you are travelling outside the zones covered by your period ticket, and have an active ticket on your travelcard, you can buy a supplementary ticket either from the driver or at a ticket machine. If you are travelling by train, you cannot pay using pay-as-you-go credit or buy a supplementary ticket on board.

Groups using the same travelcard

If a group wishes to travel using the same travelcard, up to 15 single tickets can be purchased at one of our ticket machines, or an unlimited number at one of our staffed sales outlets. These will all be entered onto the travelcard in question. You start the tickets for the entire group at the same time by scanning the card on board buses or trams, or at the electronic barrier at Metro stations.

On regional buses any number of passengers can buy tickets as long as there is credit on the travelcard in question (max. NOK 2000). You just tell the driver your destination and how many are in the group. The driver will deduct the correct amount from the travelcard and all the tickets will be started up and made valid for your journey.

Children and seniors

If you want to pay for a child or seniors ticket using pay-as-you-go credit in Zone 1 (the Oslo zone), you must register your date of birth at one of our sales outlets so that the correct fare can be deducted. Here are Ruter's sales outlets. On regional buses in Akershus just tell the driver that you want a child or seniors ticket. This way you don't have to make any changes on your travelcard.

Top-up your pay-as-you-go credit – automatically

If you want to be sure that you always have credit on your travelcard, you can subscribe to get automatic top-ups. The way this works is that when your account falls below NOK 50, a pre-agreed amount will be credited to your card when you scan it.

You can order a travelcard with pay-as-you-go credit and a subscription for automatic top-up here at ruter.no. Go to ordering (only in Norwegian). You can also visit us at our Customer Service Centre (the former Trafikanten) or at one of our service points. Contact information for Ruter's Customer Service Centre and service points.

Checking how much credit is left on your travelcard

If you are travelling in Zone 1 (the Oslo zone), you can see how much credit you have left on your card by checking the scanner display when you activate your ticket. If you want to check the amount without activating a ticket, go to one of our ticket machines or one of our ticket sales outlets.

If you are travelling in the other zones, the driver can tell you how much credit you have left, or you can check the amount at other Ruter ticket sales outlets.
