The Realtime System in Oslo and Akershus

The development of the Realtime System (SIS) in Oslo and Akershus has given good results and has proven to be of great assistance for both drivers and the public.

Who is responsible for the System?

The establishment of the Realtime System (SIS) is a collaboration between the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen), Ruter AS, , the Agency for Road and Transport (Samferdselsetaten) in Oslo County and Trafikanten. Trafikanten is responsible for the project management and implementation of SIS. SIS is implemented under the direction of Oslopakke 3, an action plan for the development of the infrastructure and purchase of materials for public transport in the counties of Oslo and Akershus.

Getting there faster! Better onboard information!

Trams and busses should get there faster. The Realtime Information System contains technology to prioritise busses and trams at signal-controlled intersections. The Realtime System also ensures the automatic display and announcement of the next stop in the carriages.

Universal Accessibility

Trafikanten takes universal accessibility seriously. In 2010 we began to set up realtime signs with speech synthesis and tactile maps. One of these signs that can be seen, heard and felt is located at Europarådets plass near Jernbanetorget. We are also continuously working to make realtime information available for everyone onboard busses, metro services and trams. In all new transport vehicles information is clearly visible on screens and is announced aloud for each stop.

Screens for Hotels, Shopping Centres and Organisations

Trafikanten has developed screen solutions for realtime information. Indoor screens that show the closest stop(s) can be displayed in places where many can benefit from the information. The solution can be purchased through distributors. Contact us via our contact form for more information.

Fleet Management and Support Resources for Drivers

All busses and trams have a driver terminal that gives information about the actual journey, automates functions and provides the option for two-way written communication. Several of the operating companies in Oslo and Akershus have also acquired terminals that give an overview of where their transport vehicles are at any given time. This provides vastly improved possibilities to monitor and manage the traffic, benefiting the company, drivers and the public.

Statistical Resources

The Realtime Information System is an important source of statistical data for use in traffic planning. Delays and navigation problems can be extracted from the registered data and is very useful when working on improving navigation and public transport services. Trafikanten is responsible for gathering, processing and analysing the statistical data from the Realtime System.

Want access to our data?

External developers can now get free access to both realtime data and journey planner data. You can read more about this on our developers website labs.trafikanten.no.
